On Women's Day 2011 (9 August) we also launched the Shake the World campaign in South Africa. This Netherlands - South African initiative of the Rainbow Collection & BEHOLD aims to create awareness for the UN Millennium Development Goals simply by wearing the 8 colorful bracelets each representing one of the MDGs. The bracelets are handmade by over 300 talented Zulu women working for the fair trade producer Africa Ignite in KwaZulu Natal and with that it immediately contributes to Goal 1 (poverty reduction), 3 (gender rights) and 8 (global partnerships).
The campaign is supported by partners like the Edgars stores, business news radio SAfm, Trinergy brand connectors, Umuzi photoclub and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Because of its support to the rural craft women the launch date was chosen to be on Women's Day and it was live broadcasted by SAfm radio from the Edgars store, in Eastgate mall Johannesburg, where the sale of the first 100.000 bracelets started.
The initiative is supported by many South African celebrities, athletes and presenters so called 'Shakers' and also our own Ambassador, Mr Andre Haspels was present at both the launch of the Shake the World campaign in the Netherlands on Youth Day the 16th of June as in South Africa. In his radio interview and during the press conference the Ambassador expressed the Netherlands commitment towards the MDGs and his personal interest in MDG 8 to build global partnerships. Andre Haspels expressed his support as "This social entrepreneurial approach reflects the TRADE not AID ambition of our government to promote international (fair) trade and social responsible businesses in which the private sector, government and NGOs work hand in hand for sustainable socio-economic development".
